The Guymon Police Department is warning of an ATM machine scam that is making its way around the United States. The scam has not made it to Guymon or Texas County, but Guymon police chief Eddie Adamson said he wanted residents to be aware in case something unusual happens with their ATM card.
"What they're doing is altering the ATM machine," Adamson said this morning. "So when someone puts their card in, the machine acts like it has taken the card and won't return it."
Adamson said the way scam works is someone will walk in with an unsuspecting victim and stand in line, pretending they are going to use the ATM machine. When it takes the card, they will offer to help the victim, usually noting what the person's PIN number is.
"The machine still won't work," Adamson said. "And when the person leaves, the crook will steal the ATM card and have the PIN number.
"It's not in this area at the moment, but other law enforcement agencies have been facing it around the country," Adamson said. "So if someone tries to put their card in and it's taken, maybe it's not being declined, maybe it's a crook trying to steal the card."
