Citizens urged to use caution if called by automated phone message machine reporting to be a bank or credit card company

Guymon, Oklahoma, January 22, 2010- The Guymon Police Department has received information that citizens in Guymon have been contacted by a phone scam system trying to get information on debit cards. The scammers are using an automated telephone system to make calls and then play a recorded message saying their debit card had been frozen and they need to enter the number so it can be reactivated.

“We were made aware of the calls this morning and figured it was a scam that had just made it to our part of the world so I did a simple internet search of that phone number they are using and it turns out these scammers have been hitting places all over the United States,” commented Chief of Police Eddie Adamson.

The number that is showing up on caller ID’s is 615-378-6237.

“Banking institutions never call and ask a person for their ATM number or any other information of that nature so if anyone receives a call like this it should automatically set off an alarm and the best thing they can do is simply hang up immediately and never provide that information in a situation similar to that,” Adamson added.

The Guymon Police is urging anyone who may have received a call of this nature and provided their debit card information to contact their bank and make them aware of the situation as well as contact the police department at 580-338-6525.
