Water Restrictions Lifted

Weeks of hot, dry weather in June and July and a water pump malfunction put a strain on the Guymon water supply this summer.

But heavy rains in August, the start of school and the natural growing season of grasses in the city has eased the demand on the water supply. As a results, Guymon Public Works Director Ivan Clark on Thursday evening recommended to the city council that the city lift water restrictions its enacted on June 12.

The restriction will be lifted effective Monday, September 1st.

"The numbers (water usage) have come down and stabilized, and probably for the most part the severe heat is over with, there still could be some hot days," Clark told the city council Thursday. "I feel comfortable where we could lift the ban and water conservation."

The city issued an odd-even watering system, banned watering any time on Wednesdays and restricted watering to the overnight or early in the morning on June 12 when the dry weather and hot temperatures brought Guymon's water usage to near capacity.

The problem became critical when a water well and pump went out on July 24.

That still didn't prevent some residents and businesses from continuing business as usual, watering during restricted times.

"The nights are cooling off, it's that time of the year," Clark said. "I think the grasses will slow down from using as much water. Historically, when school starts our numbers do go down and it did again this year."

Clark mentioned that wasting water was a major issue the city dealt with this year and said it would be for years to come. Many businesses were seen spraying down their parking lots and sidewalks. While that's a common practice, it is a huge waste of water.

"We still need to be very ... about not wasting our water," Clark said. "Hopefully when the wells come in, next year we'll have adequate water. But we still do not need to waste water."

Three new fresh water wells were approved earlier this month and Clark said they will be going in around the second week of September.
